Srinagar, Sep 11: National Conference (NC) senior leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Wednesday said Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chief Engineer Rashid’s release from prison should be viewed as an “opportunity to strengthen the broader fight” against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), rather than as a challenge to the NC.
Speaking to reporters in north Kashmir’s Sopore, Ruhullah,, said that NC’s mission is centred on protecting the rights and future of Jammu & Kashmir. He cautioned that the division of votes could benefit the BJP in the upcoming elections.
The MP asserted that the National Conference has its own agenda, fight and narrative. “If Er Rashid and his party stand to fight the BJP without compromising on principles, it will complement our cause, not challenge it,” he said.
When asked about competition and candidate participation, Aga said NC is focused on its own performance. “Most political parties have exposed themselves. We aren’t the ones claiming that they are working with the BJP – they’ve shown it themselves,” he remarked.
He said some political figures, particularly those from parties symbolised by sports icons, have openly expressed pride in collaborating with the BJP. “These parties, which once allied with the BJP or sought ministerial positions through them, are serving the BJP’s purpose. We’re not tagging or naming them – their actions speak for themselves,” he added.
Addressing the potential impact of a repeat wave of support for Er Rashid, Ruhullah downplayed it, saying the previous wave was due to temporary sympathy rather than a movement focused on the long-term welfare of Jammu & Kashmir. “Our fight is not for a single prisoner but for the thousands languishing in jails and for the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
The NC leader likened the region to an “open-air prison” due to the ongoing challenges it faces while reaffirming NC’s commitment to fighting for the “rights, dignity and future” of J&K.
He warned of BJP’s strategy to consolidate votes in Hindu-majority constituencies in Jammu and to divide votes in Kashmir.
Ruhulla urged voters to unite and avoid fragmenting their votes, stressing the importance of preventing the BJP from gaining power.
When asked about Er Rashid’s remarks accusing the NC of being focused on power, Aga Ruhullah declined to respond directly, saying, “The people will give their response to that.” (KNO)
