Amidst the rise in the unemployment in Jammu & Kashmir, the efforts to empower women and bolster rural livelihoods are crucial for sustainable development. The Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs), spearheaded by the State Bank of India (SBI), have emerged as a beacon of hope for rural women striving for self-reliance. Through targeted training programs in tailoring, embroidery, and other vocational skills, these institutes are not only equipping women with the tools to earn a livelihood but also instilling in them the confidence to shape their destinies. The focus on tailoring and similar trades is particularly commendable, given their relevance to the local culture and market demands. By aligning training programs with the socio-economic realities of the region, RSETIs ensure that the skills imparted are practical and immediately applicable. Tailoring, for instance, not only caters to local needs but also offers opportunities for women to tap into broader markets through entrepreneurial ventures. The ripple effects of such initiatives are far-reaching. Empowered women contribute significantly to household incomes, improving living standards and reducing dependency. Moreover, they serve as role models, inspiring others in their communities to break free from traditional barriers and embrace self-employment opportunities. However, while the efforts of SBI’s RSETIs deserve praise, there is a pressing need to amplify their impact. For these programs to truly transform lives, they must be scaled up and supported with complementary measures. The measures include access to credit and market linkages, post-training support and mentorship and expanding the range of training programmes. These initiatives are a step in the right direction, demonstrating the transformative potential of targeted skill development programs.
