The poverty is among the major challenges, which the country is facing. But the government has already taken a series of measures to make the nation poverty-free. Similarly in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has aimed to make the Union Territory poverty-free in the years to come. In this regard, a couple of steps have been taken to empower the common masses here so that there would be an end to the poverty. In one such instance, the government also came up with the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G)—a flagship scheme of the Government of India, which is aimed at providing affordable housing to the rural poor. PM Awas Gramin was launched in 2016 with the goal of providing pucca houses with basic amenities to all houseless households living in kutcha or dilapidated houses in rural areas by 2024, with a view to boost the ‘Housing for All’ scheme. However, in Jammu and Kashmir, a deadline of March 31 has been set to identify the deserving beneficiaries. There is a need to identify genuine beneficiaries and ensuring inclusivity under PMAY-G. The efforts must be made with sincerity so that no one is left out under the scheme. A sincere and transparent approach in beneficiary selection and resource allocation is pivotal. Since to PMAY-G scheme has brought transformative impact on rural housing across Jammu and Kashmir, there is a need to work hard and reach out to all the deserving people. The scheme has turned out to be a significant initiative, aimed at providing dignified housing to economically weaker sections of society. To ensure that the benefits reach every single deserving beneficiary, it is the high time for the government to work with dedication and transform the lives by providing not just houses but homes that offer hope and dignity to the downtrodden section of the society.
