Known for the pristine slopes, the world famous-ski-resort in Kashmir, has been usually witnessing a massive footfall of visitors, especially during the winter season as the snowfall adds to the beauty of Gulmarg. The picturesque place has gained further fame in the last more than five years as it hosted the annual sports event titled Khelo India Winter Games, witnessing a massive participation of athletes from different parts of the country. However, as the government has promised to turn it into a world-class golf destination, the renewed focus on developing and marketing Gulmarg’s golf course to global standards is both visionary and strategic. It is being seen as a move that could redefine the tourism narrative of Jammu and Kashmir. The Gulmarg Golf Course, one of the highest in the world at an altitude of over 8,600 feet, offers a surreal blend of natural beauty and challenging play. Originally laid out in the early 20th century and redesigned in the 1970s, it is not only rich in history but also holds immense potential for attracting high-end tourists and international tournaments. What it needs now is infrastructure upgradation, professional management and global branding. World-class status requires world-class facilities, well-maintained fairways, modern clubhouses, professional coaching centers, caddie training, seamless logistics and eco-conscious landscaping. Importantly, international exposure through tournaments, celebrity endorsements, and tie-ups with global golf circuits will be essential to put Gulmarg on the global map. Golf in Gulmarg should not become an exclusive domain for outsiders but an inclusive venture that benefits the local economy. Training programs for youth, employment opportunities in hospitality and course maintenance and support for local handicrafts and cuisine can ensure the community reaps the dividends of tourism growth. Environmental sustainability must also remain a core principle. Gulmarg’s ecological fragility demands that all developmental work—from turf management to water usage—adhere to green standards. The goal should be to make Gulmarg not just a world-class golf destination, but a model of sustainable tourism.
