Keep Kashmir connected

Nearly a decade-long work has finally reached its logical conclusion as the much-awaited Z-Morh or Sonamarg tunnel is all set to be inaugurated today by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi amidst the tight security arrangements. The inauguration marks a monumental step in the development of Jammu and Kashmir tourism sector. This tunnel promises to be a game changer for tourism in the region, particularly in Sonamarg, a picturesque place in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. The place was usually remaining cut-off due to the heavy snowfall during winters and thus the people could not visit the place during the harsh winters, but since the inauguration is set today, the place will remain open round-the-year for visitors, expecting a huge turnout of the visitors like the famous ski-resort—Gulmarg. The Z-Morh Tunnel, which connects Sonamarg with Srinagar, is a vital infrastructure project that will significantly reduce travel time between these two destinations. Sonamarg, known as the “Meadow of Gold,” has long been an undiscovered gem in the region’s tourism map. However, until now, its accessibility has been limited, especially during the harsh winter months when the Srinagar-Leh highway often remains closed due to heavy snowfall. The Z-Morh Tunnel not only ensures smooth year-round access to Sonamarg but also opens up a plethora of opportunities for growth in the local tourism sector. This strategic infrastructural development will catalyze a surge in tourism to Sonamarg, leading to an influx of domestic and international visitors. However, the government should now focus on organizing the sports events like skiing and other things to attract the tourists to the place so that its potential can be explored and the stakeholders would get a chance to earn their livelihood.
