Kashmir Valley has been witnessing less snowfall compared to the previous years, which is being seen as an alarming situation as the future seasons may witness water scarcity and other issues as well. Snowfall in winters is seen as a pivotal precipitation shape, which helps in ensuring the water supply to the consumers here during the other three seasons. But when the intensity of snowfall is declining in the Valley, it can have far reaching consequences. The snowfall in winters is important for the seasons ahead. In case of the less snowfall, the water scarcity, inconvenience in irrigation works would become normal in the Valley. The absence of snowfall is also leading to the rise in the maximum temperatures as witnessed in the month of January this year like previous years as well. Changing weather patterns are seen as the reasons behind the less snowfall in Kashmir with the experts claiming that the precipitation was being witnessed mainly in the shape of snowfall in the Valley almost a decade ago, but now the situation has changed. The reason behind the less snowfall is the change in the weather pattern due to global warming and also the rise in the temperatures across the Valley. Therefore, all that needs to be done is to stay future-ready by taking apt measures to preserve the water for the people for drinking purposes as well as the irrigation purposes, which would help in easing life during the times to come. The concerned departments should take measures before it is too late and ensure there is no paucity of water during summer season.
