Srinagar, Apr 9: The transport department of Jammu and Kashmir has reported a substantial revenue generation from the sector during the financial year 2024–25, with earnings touching Rs 964 crore, government data reveals.
Data reveals that the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) alone generated a total revenue of Rs 782.67 crore up to January 2025. During the same period, the MVD incurred an expenditure of Rs 20.23 crore, indicating a high net gain for the department.
The Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) covering the period from April 2024 to December 2024 reported earnings of Rs 181.31 crore (Rs 1813.11 lakh) and an expenditure of Rs 115.69 crore (Rs 11569.25 lakh).
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) recorded an even more impressive revenue collection. From April 2024 to December 2024, the JKRTC amassed Rs 1813.11 lakh in revenue, while the expenditure during this period stood at over Rs 115.69 crore.
The data suggests a healthy financial state for the transport sector with a joint revenue (MVD + JKRTC) touches Rs 964 crore, while 135.92 crore as expenditure and Net Surplus Rs 828.08 crore—the data was disclosed in a written response to a query raised by MLA Thakur Randhir Singh.
In response to another question regarding parameters for starting a new bus service, the Minister Incharge said that multiple factors are considered, including regulatory approvals, logistics, route surveys, road connectivity, public demand, and financial feasibility. Additionally, population size and availability of transport in a given area play crucial roles. (KNO)
