Waqf Act game changer for Muslim community: M A Shah

Srinagar, Apr 11: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from Ganderbal, Mohammad Amin Shah, has expressed strong support for the recent amendment to the Waqf Bill, calling it a transformative step toward empowering the Waqf Board and freeing it from the clutches of political interference.
Speaking to reporters in Ganderbal, Shah emphasized that the amendment, passed by both houses of Parliament earlier this month and signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu on April 5, marks a significant shift in how Waqf properties will be managed across India.
“The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, is a historic decision that will empower the Waqf Board to serve its true purpose—uplifting the community while ensuring transparency and accountability,” Shah said. “For too long, political parties have influenced these boards for their own gain. This amendment isolates the board from such pressures, allowing it to focus on its core mission.”
Shah highlighted that the new law introduces measures to enhance the board’s autonomy, streamline property management, and boost revenue generation. He argued that these changes would curb exploitation, a persistent issue that has plagued Waqf institutions for decades by Jammu and Kashmir regional political parties. “The amendment ensures that the board will now be accountable to the common people, not just a handful of political elites. Exploitation will be minimized, and the revenue generated from Waqf properties will be utilized for the welfare of the community,” he added.
Drawing particular attention to the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board, Shah praised its exemplary performance, suggesting it has set a benchmark for others to follow. “The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board has presented itself as an example for the entire country. Its efforts in managing properties efficiently and serving the public should inspire Waqf Boards nationwide. With this amendment, we are taking that standard to new heights,” he remarked.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which amends the Waqf Act of 1995, has been a subject of intense debate. Proponents, including Shah, argue that it brings much-needed transparency and efficiency to the management of Waqf properties—land and assets donated by Muslims for religious and charitable purposes. The law introduces provisions for better coordination between Waqf Boards and local authorities, mandates audits, and aims to protect stakeholders’ rights, particularly those of marginalized groups like widows and divorced women.
As a senior BJP leader from Ganderbal, Shah’s endorsement carries weight in the region especially in District Ganderbal, where Waqf properties play a significant role in community welfare. He urged the public to see the amendment as a step toward progress rather than division. “The days of mismanagement and political meddling are over. This law will unlock the true potential of Waqf properties, generating revenue that can fund education, healthcare, and social programs for the needy in district Ganderbal,” he concluded.
