Srinagar, Jul 2: As the Kashmir Valley grapples with an intense heatwave, water consumption has surged sharply, especially in Srinagar, with the Jal Shakti Department ramping up monitoring and field interventions. Despite efforts, residents continue to report limited water availability.
Chief Engineer, Jal Shakti (PHE) Kashmir, Er Taj Mohammad Chowdhary, said that the department is managing the increased demand. He, however, said that high temperatures and water misuse are straining the supply system.
“This is the peak season. Water demand, particularly from Srinagar city, has risen significantly. Our reservoirs and filtration plants are operating at full capacity, but people must avoid wastage,” he said.
Chowdhary said that the limited number of freshwater sources in Srinagar makes it challenging to meet the rising needs. “The system is under stress, but there is no failure on our part. We are fully prepared, and there is no alarming situation. Water supply remains sufficient, with demand being the main issue,” he assured. He added that all filtration plants and infrastructure are functioning optimally, and there has been no supply breakdown. The main concern is excessive and non-essential water use.
When asked about preparations if the dry spell continues into August, the Chief Engineer said that additional water tankers could be deployed if necessary. “The tender process has already been completed, and we are prepared for contingencies,” he said.
Currently, over a dozen tankers are operational in Srinagar alone, with similar arrangements in other districts. “We have instructed field officers to curb misuse, and surveillance teams are monitoring water usage,” Chowdhary added.
Meanwhile, residents continue to voice concerns over irregular supply. Bilal Ahmad of Zaina Kadal, Srinagar, said, “We get water for barely half an hour in the morning. By the time we store it, the supply stops again. This has been going on for the third time.”
Nusrat, a homemaker from Chattabal Srinagar, questioned the department’s claims, saying, “They say the supply is normal, but our taps stay dry. Sometimes, we don’t get water for the entire day.”
It is noteworthy that the Kashmir Valley has been experiencing record-breaking temperatures, with Srinagar recently crossing 35°C. The Meteorological Department has forecasted two days of hot and humid weather with potential rain showers in some areas.
With temperatures rising, officials continue to appeal for the judicious use of water. “It is a collective responsibility. We request the public to avoid unnecessary consumption so that everyone receives their fair share,” Chowdhary urged.
