Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

In a recent statement, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to women-led development, asserting it as a foundational pillar for achieving lasting peace and sustainable progress in the region. This vision is not only timely but also transformative. It recognizes that true development cannot be achieved without empowering half of the population, our women. Jammu and Kashmir turns a new chapter, the idea of development driven by women offers a powerful alternative narrative, i.e. inclusive, resilient and rooted in equity. The LG’s vision aligns seamlessly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader national push for “Nari Shakti” and gender-inclusive governance. The government’s mission is already taking shape through various initiatives: support for women entrepreneurs under schemes like Umeed, expansion of Self Help Groups (SHGs), skill training under Mission Youth, and dedicated platforms for female participation in governance, education, and business. From rural cottage industries to tech start-ups, women in J&K are stepping into roles that were long denied to them, not just as beneficiaries but as decision-makers and leaders. What makes this push significant is its potential to create a cascading effect. Economically empowered women contribute directly to household incomes, improve children’s access to education and healthcare and foster community resilience. However, this mission must go beyond slogans and schemes. There is also a need for strong institutional support, mentorship networks, and robust monitoring of gender-focused initiatives. Peace in Jammu and Kashmir cannot be achieved through security measures alone. It must be rooted in the empowerment of its people, especially its women. A society where women are safe, skilled, self-reliant, and respected is one that naturally fosters harmony and development.
