Kashmir’s next revolution will rise from its fields

Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

The Kashmir Valley has witnessed a long-overdue and much-needed crackdown on traffic violations. With the region grappling with a disturbing rise in road accidents and an alarming loss of precious lives, the authorities have launched an extensive drive to enforce traffic rules more strictly across urban and rural areas alike. This initiative, spearheaded by the administration, is a commendable step toward restoring order on the roads and instilling a culture of responsibility among drivers. The statistics paint a grim picture: scores of people, many of them young, have lost their lives in preventable road accidents, caused by reckless driving, over-speeding, drunk driving, underage driving and non-adherence to basic safety protocols such as wearing helmets or seat belts. In many cases, the tragedy is compounded by inadequate public awareness and a casual attitude toward traffic laws. The ongoing drive is not limited to penalizing violators but also focuses on raising awareness through campaigns, public outreach, and education drives in schools and colleges. Vehicles found without proper registration, insurance or valid licenses are being seized, and fines are being imposed on errant drivers. Particularly noteworthy is the attention given to the menace of underage driving and two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets – two of the leading causes of fatal accidents in the region. However, enforcement alone is not enough. This initiative must be sustained and supported by improvements in infrastructure. Many roads in the Valley remain in poor condition, lack proper signage, and are poorly lit, especially in rural areas. Authorities must work in tandem with municipal bodies and public works departments to ensure that the physical conditions of the roads do not negate the impact of stricter enforcement.
