Shopian, Aug 9: In a proactive intervention, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Shopian and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Shopian prevented a child marriage that was scheduled to be solemnized in November 2025.
As per the official handout, the case came to light when the Social Welfare department, during document verification for the Marriage Assistance Scheme found that the proposed bride was under the legal age for marriage. Acting swiftly, the concerned officials of the department intervened to halt the process.
Both families were counselled extensively about the legal implications and social repercussions of child marriage and were made aware that such practices not only violate the law but also adversely affect the health, education, and overall well-being of the child.
District Child Protection Officer, Shopian emphasized that the Mission Vatsalya is deeply committed to protecting children from exploitation and crimes, and will continue to take strict measures to prevent such incidents in the district.
