Drug addiction is one of the root causes behind kidnappings, murders, loss of dignity, ruined personalities, and declining health. Drugs can lead to deadly diseases such as cancer in various organs. Addicts are at high risk of heart attacks, stomach problems, and countless other complications. Sadly, drug addiction has spread like wildfire among our youth, bringing with it a wave of social evils.
Drugs are not simply medicines used for treatment under a doctor’s supervision; they are also substances misused for false happiness or momentary pleasure. This misuse is destroying our youth, our families, and our communities. Addiction does not just harm the body; it also destroys character, turning bright minds into negative thinkers and productive lives into wasted ones.
Drug addiction among youth has created alarming issues across society. Change may be difficult, but it is necessary. We must unite for the sake of our youth—the very foundation of our nation. Every one of us bears responsibility to fight this menace.
What are drugs?
Drugs prescribed by specialists help treat health problems. However, harmful drugs such as cocaine, brown sugar, cannabis, and others are misused, leading to devastating consequences. Disturbingly, even school-going children are falling prey to these substances, putting the future of our society at risk.
In Kashmir, drug addiction has been rising rapidly in recent years. According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, nearly one million individuals in the Union Territory are struggling with substance abuse.
Why drug addiction is increasing in Kashmir
Several factors contribute to this curse: Negative peer influence from friends, siblings, or acquaintances. Stress and lack of healthy coping mechanisms. Absence of proper counselling for youth. Easy availability of drugs in certain environments.
The consequences are dire—loss of health, wealth, family bonds, and even life itself.
Law enforcement is working tirelessly to curb this menace. Police and agencies frequently arrest drug peddlers and crack down on supply networks. However, harsher punishments and stronger measures are still needed against those who are destroying the lives of our young generation—the future scientists, technologists, and leaders of tomorrow.
How to eradicate drug addiction
We can all play a role in stopping this evil. Some effective measures include:
1. Parental & Family Care: Parents must monitor their children’s activities, peer groups, and habits. Regular visits to schools and colleges to check attendance and performance. Open communication at home about needs, problems, and emotions. If suspicion arises, parents should immediately seek professional counselling for their children.
2. Counselling & Awareness: Monthly counselling sessions in schools, colleges, and institutions. Posters and awareness campaigns highlighting the consequences of drug use. Engagement of trained experts to guide and support vulnerable youth.
3. Sports & Healthy Activities: Encourage children to take part in sports like football, cricket, and cycling. Promote gym activities and bodybuilding to channel their energy positively. Recognize and nurture their talents instead of burdening them with constant academic pressure.
Sports and bodybuilding provide a natural sense of achievement and self-confidence, reducing the temptation of drugs.
A strong message
Say no to drugs. Take care of your health. Keep your dignity. Make your parents proud. Stay away from people who indulge in drugs, and if possible, guide them to quit.
Drug addiction is life-destroying and life-taking. Let us stand together, stay happy, stay safe, and stay healthy.
