Srinagar, Sep 15: Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, Monday called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital and held a detailed discussion on the prevailing political and security scenario in the Union Territory. He also briefed the Home Minister about the devastation caused by the recent floods and submitted a comprehensive ground assessment report.
During the meeting, Sharma underscored the evolving political and security dynamics in J&K, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and stability through effective governance, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring greater public participation in the development process. He also flagged concerns relating to internal security and called for coordinated efforts to counter emerging challenges and safeguard public interest.
Sharing his observations from recent visits to flood-affected areas, Sharma highlighted extensive losses, including large-scale damage to roads, schools, healthcare facilities, homes, and standing crops. He noted that several remote regions remain cut off due to broken connectivity and disrupted communication lines, leaving affected families vulnerable.
Sharma pressed for an urgent, coordinated relief and rehabilitation programme, along with long-term measures such as climate-resilient infrastructure, robust disaster response mechanisms, and reliable early-warning systems. He also apprised the Home Minister of the relief efforts already initiated by BJP cadres in flood-hit areas.
In response, Home Minister Amit Shah assured his full support to the people of Jammu & Kashmir, reiterating the Union Government’s commitment to bolstering security, promoting political stability, and enhancing disaster preparedness across the Union Territory.
Expressing gratitude, Sharma thanked the Home Minister for his guidance and steadfast support. He reaffirmed the need for close coordination between the Centre and the J&K administration to ensure peace, stability, and sustained progress, while also addressing the urgent needs of flood-affected communities.
