Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Jammu & Kashmir soon, the people of the region are looking forward with a mixture of hope. The recent floods in several parts of the region have caused extensive damage, destroying homes, infrastructure, crops and livelihoods. In these testing times, the Prime Minister’s visit holds more than symbolic significance, it is seen as a potential turning point in the region’s path to recovery. The devastation caused by the floods has left many reeling. Farmers have lost their harvests, shopkeepers their businesses, and thousands of families are still struggling to get back on their feet. In this context, there is a growing expectation that the Prime Minister will announce a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package to aid those affected and help the region rebuild swiftly. Over the years, the people of J&K have witnessed numerous challenges, from political instability to natural disasters, but their resilience has never wavered. What they seek now is tangible support that reaches the ground, quickly and efficiently. Beyond immediate relief, long-term measures must also be considered, such as improved flood management systems, disaster preparedness infrastructure and insurance mechanisms to protect farmers and small businesses. The visit also presents an opportunity to reinforce the Union Government’s commitment to the inclusive development of J&K. While recent years have seen a push toward industrial growth, investment, and infrastructure development, natural disasters like these expose the vulnerabilities that still persist in the socio-economic fabric of the region. What the people need now is not just aid, but assurance that their voices are heard, their suffering acknowledged and their future secured with thoughtful policy and sustained support. A relief package that is comprehensive, transparent and efficiently implemented can go a long way in restoring both livelihoods and faith. As the nation’s leader prepares to step into a region grappling with hardship, it is imperative that this visit becomes a beacon of relief, rebuilding, and renewed trust. The eyes of Jammu & Kashmir are on New Delhi for action.
