Srinagar, Sep 23: Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Kumar Choudhary, Tuesday said that despite facing “tough times”, the elected government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah would continue to “fight for the rights of people” and “won’t step back”.
Talking to reporters here, the Deputy CM said the government will never succumb to the pressure. “Some people want the government to resign, but we won’t do that. We are the workers of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah. We will never succumb to the pressure and will continue to fight for the rights of the people,” he asserted.
Choudhary said that all the promises made by the National Conference (NC) leadership will be fulfilled in the five-year tenure. “We have been given five years to fulfil our promises. Only ten months have elapsed so far, and we will fulfil all our promises,” he said.
The Dy CM further added that the government has been facing hurdles due to the limited powers in the Union Territory. “The government doesn’t have a free hand under the dual governance system. Let the statehood be restored, we will show what the government is capable of doing,” he said while replying to the statements of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Sunil Sharma.
He stated that the government has been working diligently to advocate for the rights of its people.
The Deputy CM said the issue regarding the restoration of statehood and special status was also discussed in the cabinet meeting today. “Leave statehood aside, the LG has not finalised the business rules,” he added.
Choudhary blamed the opposition parties, including BJP and PDP, for neglecting the development during their tenure. He said they must answer why the issues regarding the traffic jams have not been resolved during their rule.
The Deputy Chief Minister, after reviewing the ongoing road-widening project (Boulevard Road at Nehru Park), said that the project would be inaugurated on October 17, which will improve the traffic flow and enhance the tourist experience once the project is completed.
The government is committed to finishing the work within the set deadline, he added. (KNO)
