Leh, Sep 26: Curfew remained in force in Leh town for the third straight day on Friday, even as a Home Ministry team held meetings with the Lt Governor, civil and police officials, and leaders of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) to review the security situation.
The restrictions were imposed after violent clashes during a shutdown called by LAB left four people dead and around 90 injured. Over 50 people have been detained, while strict prohibitory orders continue in Leh and Kargil.
Authorities said the situation is peaceful and curfew may be relaxed later to allow purchase of essentials. Schools, colleges, and anganwadi centres have been ordered shut for two days.
LAB and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), spearheading the agitation for statehood and Sixth Schedule status, confirmed that a preparatory meeting with the Home Ministry will take place in New Delhi on September 27 or 28, followed by formal talks on October 6.
In Kargil, normal life resumed Friday after a shutdown call by the KDA, though heavy security deployment remained in place. (KINS)
