Are we forgetting our parents?

The fresh spell of snowfall in Kashmir’s picturesque destinations, including Gulmarg and Sonamarg, has brought a renewed sense of hope to the region’s tourism sector. After months of uncertainty and a noticeable slump in tourist arrivals following the unfortunate April 22 attack in Pahalgam, this change in weather could mark the beginning of a much-needed revival. Snowfall in Kashmir has always been a magnet for tourists, especially during the autumn and early winter months. Destinations like Gulmarg, known for its ski slopes, and Sonamarg, with its breathtaking alpine views, are once again donning a white mantle, offering the perfect setting for winter tourism. Hoteliers, travel agents and local businesses that rely heavily on tourism are optimistic that this early snowfall will help attract visitors from across the country and abroad. The dip in tourist footfall post the Pahalgam incident dealt a heavy blow to an economy already vulnerable due to seasonal fluctuations and political sensitivities. Many bookings were cancelled, and local stakeholders reported significant losses during what was expected to be a peak season. This new snowfall, therefore, is more than a scenic delight as it is a potential economic lifeline. However, this opportunity must be backed by action. The administration must assure safety and security to tourists, ramp up promotional campaigns and ensure infrastructure is in place to support increased tourist activity. Confidence-building measures and positive messaging can help undo the damage caused earlier this year. Kashmir remains one of India’s most alluring travel destinations. The fresh snowfall is nature’s way of inviting the world back to its valleys. It is now up to the government and tourism stakeholders to make the most of this opportunity and ensure a safe, vibrant and successful winter season ahead.
