Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed significant developmental initiatives in recent years. New public buildings, infrastructure projects and urban amenities have transformed many parts of the region, signaling growth and modernization. However, despite these advancements, one persistent issue continues to frustrate residents and commuters alike: traffic congestion, particularly in Srinagar. While developmental projects are commendable, the city’s roads have largely remained narrow, unable to cope with the increasing volume of vehicles. Widening roads is not merely an aesthetic requirement; it is a functional necessity. Without adequate road space, even minor traffic incidents can lead to long jams, causing delays, increasing fuel consumption and impacting productivity. The gap between infrastructure growth and commuter needs is becoming increasingly evident. Adding to the daily struggle are the unnecessary closures of U-turns and access points. While some closures may have been intended to streamline traffic, in reality, they have restricted vehicle movement and forced commuters into longer, more congested routes. This has exacerbated the frustration of residents, who already face long travel times and unpredictable delays. It is crucial that authorities address these issues with urgency. Urban planning must prioritize the widening of key roads and the strategic opening of U-turns to ensure smoother traffic flow. Development is not just about constructing new buildings or facilities but about improving the quality of life for citizens. Traffic management, proper road infrastructure and commuter-friendly measures are integral to realizing the full benefits of urban development. Jammu and Kashmir stands at a crossroads: while developmental projects showcase progress, neglecting the everyday challenges of commuters undermines this growth. A balanced approach, combining infrastructure development with practical road planning, can ensure that the promise of modernization translates into a more livable, efficient city for all.
