Amid the continuous dry spell in Jammu and Kashmir, the prevailing water supply situation in Srinagar is largely normal. However, the government has cautioned about the potential water paucity in rural areas, which should not be underestimated. At present, the major water sources in Jammu and Kashmir are already under stress as the level has been reduced to a large extent. Amid such a situation, the Jal Shakti Department has indicated that production plants are functioning at full capacity, making it increasingly difficult to meet the rising demand if dry conditions persist. Therefore, the situation calls for urgent public cooperation and responsible water usage. Rural pockets of Srinagar are often the first to feel the impact of declining water levels, as these areas depend heavily on natural sources and smaller distribution networks. A sustained dry spell could reduce discharge in streams and springs, disrupt pumping schedules, and ultimately lead to irregular or inadequate water supply. While the administration is taking proactive measures including monitoring water bodies and preparing contingency plans, the role of citizens remains crucial in preventing a crisis. Judicious use of water must become a collective habit rather than a temporary response to warnings. Simple actions like avoiding wastage during household chores, fixing leakages, reducing excessive use in gardens or car washing and storing water responsibly can significantly ease pressure on the system. Srinagar has faced water stress in the past and the current scenario is a reminder that natural resources cannot be taken for granted. The time to act is now, before the taps start running dry. Therefore, it is high time for the people to use water judiciously and responsibly to safeguard the needs of tomorrow.
