Baramulla, Dec 16: Jammu and Kashmir cricket scripted a historic chapter at the IPL Season 19 mini auction as Baramulla-born pacer Auqib Nabi Dar was snapped up by Delhi Capitals for a staggering Rs 8.40 crore, making him one of the most expensive Indian players at the auction.
The high-profile signing, not only highlights Auqib’s meteoric rise in Indian domestic cricket but also marks a proud and defining moment for Jammu and Kashmir—a region that continues to produce quality cricketers despite limited infrastructure and exposure.
Reacting to his son’s big breakthrough, Auqib’s father, Ghulam Nabi Dar said celebrations had begun at home, with emotions running high.
“The atmosphere here is completely festive. We always believed in Auqib’s hard work and dedication. This moment is a reward for years of struggle and sacrifice,” he said.
The father expressed his pride, saying, “It’s a dream come true. Auqib has worked so hard for this. Initially, I was against his obsession with cricket, but over time, I realised it was his passion.”
Dar, a school teacher, added, “It feels like all our prayers have been answered. I want every young person to choose sports and stay away from drugs. It’s the true path of discipline and purpose.”
Leading the J&K contingent at the auction, the 28-year-old right-arm pacer has steadily carved a reputation as one of the most reliable fast bowlers on the domestic circuit.
Known for his ability to swing the ball, maintain disciplined lines and lengths, and perform under pressure, Auqib has been a consistent match-winner for Jammu and Kashmir across formats.
Auqib’s breakthrough came in the most recent Ranji Trophy season, where he delivered a series of match-defining spells and finished with an impressive 44 wickets, placing him among the top wicket-takers in the country. His performances against established domestic sides did not go unnoticed, eventually triggering a competitive bidding war among IPL franchises.
Apart from his bowling prowess, Auqib has also proved his utility with the bat down the order, enhancing his credentials as a genuine all-round option, which further boosted his demand at the auction table.

The north Kashmir town erupted in joy, with dhols, firecrackers, and congratulatory processions in Auqib’s native Sheeri village, where family, friends, and villagers gathered to celebrate with cake-cuttings and festivities.
Prominent local cricketer Jahengir Lone said, “We always knew Auqib had the potential. His dedication, discipline, and willpower made the selectors take notice. This is not just his achievement—it’s a proud day for Baramulla and the entire Valley.”
The Baramulla Cricket Forum called Auqib’s selection “a moment of collective triumph,” expressing hope that he will soon don the Indian jersey and bring further pride to the region.

Earlier, several players from Jammu and Kashmir—including Parvez Rasool, Umran Malik, Abdul Samad, Rasikh Salam, Yudhvir Singh, Mohammad Mudhasir and Manzoor Pandav—have featured in the IPL. While some enjoyed extended game time and stardom, others benefitted from world-class training environments and exposure.
