Srinagar, Dec 27: The Kashmir Valley is witnessing a fresh and significant surge in tourist arrivals ahead of the New Year, with popular destinations such as Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg experiencing a huge rush of visitors.
Tourists from different parts of India have started arriving in large numbers to celebrate the New Year amid snowfall, frozen landscapes and winter festivities. Hotels, guest houses and resorts in these tourist hubs are reporting high occupancy, while busy scenes are being witnessed at sightseeing points, markets and snow activity zones.
Visitors from Maharashtra and Gujarat said that they felt safe and welcomed in Kashmir. A tourist from Maharashtra said the locals are extremely supportive and cooperative, adding that the security arrangements on the ground are excellent. A family from Gujarat said they were initially hesitant due to past incidents but were reassured by the visible security presence and the warm hospitality of locals. They said enjoying snowfall in Kashmir has been a memorable experience for them.
The renewed tourist inflow comes months after the deadly attack at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam in April, which had shaken confidence and led to a temporary slowdown in tourism. The attack, in which several civilians, mostly tourists, were killed, had cast a shadow over the tourism sector during the early part of the year.
However, with improved security measures and sustained efforts by authorities and stakeholders, tourists have gradually started returning to the Valley. Many visitors said they chose Kashmir specifically to experience its winter charm, snow-covered mountains and festive atmosphere during the New Year celebrations.
Officials said the steady arrival of tourists reflects growing confidence and is a positive sign for the winter tourism season, which is crucial for the local economy and livelihoods linked to the sector. [KNT]
