The advisory issued by the health experts amidst the winter chill in Kashmir underlines the need for heightened public awareness. Department of Cardiology at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has issued an urgent public health advisory, cautioning people of a noticeable surge in heart-related emergencies during the cold season in Kashmir. Notably, Kashmir is presently witnessing the harshest winter period, known as Chilla-i-Kalan and therefore, the advisory would help people at this juncture. Cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict, leading to increased blood pressure and placing additional strain on the heart. Reduced physical activity, unhealthy dietary habits, stress and the tendency to ignore early symptoms further aggravate the situation. In Kashmir, prolonged exposure to extreme cold, inadequate heating arrangements, and delayed access to medical care in remote areas make the challenge even more serious. The advisory underlines the need for heightened public awareness. People must not dismiss warning signs such as chest pain, breathlessness, dizziness, or unusual fatigue as mere winter discomfort. Timely medical intervention can be lifesaving. Patients with hypertension, diabetes, or a history of heart disease should strictly adhere to prescribed medication, avoid sudden exposure to cold, and undergo regular health check-ups during winter months. Equally important is the role of the healthcare system. Hospitals and emergency services must remain fully prepared to handle a higher influx of cardiac cases. Ensuring availability of life-saving drugs, functional heating facilities, uninterrupted power supply and efficient ambulance services is essential. Strengthening referral mechanisms, especially in rural and snow-bound areas, can prevent avoidable fatalities. Therefore, the preventive measures must be actively promoted at this juncture as the proactive care, awareness and preparedness can significantly reduce winter-related cardiac emergencies and save precious lives.
