In India, cities like Goa, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru host extravagant parties, fireworks, and concerts. Goa, in particular, is expected to attract nearly 500,000 tourists this year, with popular beaches like Baga and Calangute transforming into high-energy party zones.
Different cultures have their unique traditions and customs associated with New Year’s Eve. In Spain, people eat 12 grapes at midnight for good luck. In Japan, it’s customary to visit temples and pray for a prosperous new year. In many Latin American countries, people wear yellow or red underwear to attract good fortune. In Denmark, people smash plates against friends’ doors for good luck, while in the Philippines, it’s believed that wearing polka dots brings prosperity.
The celebration of New Year’s Eve dates back thousands of years. Ancient Babylonians were among the first to mark the new year with festivities. Later, the Romans introduced January 1st as the start of the year, dedicating it to Janus, the god of beginnings.
