Students protest closure of winter tuition centre in Hajin

Srinagar, Jan 1: Dozens of students on Thursday staged a protest in Hajin town of Bandipora district against the closure of a winter tuition centre operating at MD Memorial School, expressing concern over access to affordable education during the winter break.
The protesting students, enrolled in winter tuition classes at the school, briefly blocked the Hajin Srinagar road, demanding immediate resumption of coaching. They alleged that the centre was shut down following directions from the Zonal Education Office, citing government orders.
Students said that they were not seeking any special concessions. They said private coaching centres charge around Rs 2,000 per month, which many families cannot afford, adding that the winter tuition centre was the only option that allowed students to continue studies without financial strain on parents.
Another Class X student said the closure has caused anxiety among students, especially those from economically weaker sections.
However, a government teacher, speaking on the condition of anonymity, alleged that the protest was motivated and aimed at promoting future enrolments. The teacher claimed that such activities are sometimes carried out to generate interest among students rather than being driven purely by academic concerns.
Officials maintained that the action was taken in accordance with existing government norms regulating tuition and coaching centres, and that directions were issued as per prescribed guidelines.
The situation remained peaceful. The protesters later dispersed after the police reached to the spot and assured the students that their genuine concerns would be taken up with the concerned authorities. [KNT]
