New Delhi, Jan 15: Minister for Agriculture Production, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Cooperative and Election Departments, Jammu & Kashmir, Javid Ahmad Dar, Thursday called on the Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development and held detailed discussion on key issues concerning agriculture, horticulture and rural development in the Union Territory.
During the meeting, Javid Dar apprised the Union Minister of the progress and implementation status of major Centrally Sponsored Schemes and flagship programmes in Jammu & Kashmir. He highlighted the sectoral priorities including strengthening of agricultural infrastructure, promotion of horticulture, expansion of irrigation and water management facilities, farm mechanisation, availability of quality seeds and inputs, extension services and enhancement of rural livelihoods.
The Minister specifically sought early release of the second instalment under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) and Krishonnati Yojana. He emphasised that timely financial support is crucial for uninterrupted execution of ongoing projects and effective delivery of benefits to the farmers.
Emphasising the unique agro-climatic conditions, difficult terrain and recent weather-related challenges faced by Jammu & Kashmir, the Minister urged the Union Government to accord special consideration for restoration of rural infrastructure and strengthening of farm-based livelihoods.
The Minister also discussed the recently concluded India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement and conveyed the concerns of apple growers of Jammu & Kashmir regarding its potential impact on domestic markets.
The Union Minister assured that the interests of local farmers would remain the foremost priority of the Government of India. He said that adequate safeguards would be ensured to protect the domestic horticulture, particularly the apple sector.
The Union Minister further assured that all the issues raised would be examined expeditiously for resolution. He reiterated the Government of India’s commitment in extending all necessary support for the continued development of agriculture, horticulture and rural sectors in Jammu & Kashmir.
