Baramulla, Jan 19: In a testament to the exceptional skill of Kashmiri artisans, the world’s second-largest handwoven silk carpet is nearing completion in Karlpora Kunzer village, Baramulla district. The 30×72 feet masterpiece, being woven by 15 skilled artisans, is expected to be exported abroad later this year.
The carpet, ordered by businessman Faiz Ahmed Shah, has been nine years in the making, with master weavers Abdul Gaffar Sheikh and his team working tirelessly for 10 hours a day. Made from special silk yarn prepared in Kashgar, the carpet will weigh around 12 quintals and feature 25 crore knots. The total production cost is estimated at Rs 6 crore.
“This carpet showcases the exceptional skill of Kashmiri artisans and will further strengthen Kashmir’s identity in the global handicrafts market,” said Masrat Islam, Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir. The silk used in the carpet has been selected to ensure its shine and strength increase over time, making it a true masterpiece of Kashmiri craftsmanship.
Once complete, this carpet will be a significant milestone for Kashmir’s handicraft industry, highlighting the region’s expertise in traditional craftsmanship. Once completed, the carpet will be a testament to the dedication and skill of Kashmiri artisans, and is expected to garner international recognition and acclaim.
