Srinagar, Jan 20: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo Tuesday inaugurated one-day workshop on “Fire Safety & Mitigation – Engineering Solutions”, here.
The workshop was organised by The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu & Kashmir State Centre (IEI-JKSC) in collaboration with Mechanical & Hospital Engineering Department, Kashmir and Fire & Emergency Services, J&K themed “Innovative Engineering Solutions to Prevent, Control & Mitigate Fire Risks”, bringing together engineers, administrators, academicians, students and safety professionals to deliberate on emerging fire safety challenges and engineering-driven mitigation strategies.
On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, who was the Chief Guest of the event, acknowledging the role of IEI-JKSC in promoting awareness, capacity building and engineering-led solutions, emphasised the importance of institutional preparedness and seriousness in addressing fire safety concerns.
He appreciated the Institution of Engineers for organising programmes on this relevant issue and assured that the outcomes of the workshop, when received by them, will be duly considered for implementation.
The programme commenced with the registration of participants, followed by a brief introduction by Er. Shumaila Khan, who outlined the workshop’s objectives.
In his welcome address, Er. Ferdous Ahad Bhat, FIE, Chairman, IEI-JKSC, stated that the initiative was taken in view of the reported recent fire incidents across the Valley, including residential, commercial, and forest fires. He emphasised that these incidents highlight need for preventive planning, enforcement, and technical preparedness, underscoring the need for engineers to proactively engage with fire safety as a core professional responsibility.
The programme concluded with a hands-on mock fire safety drill, during which participants received practical guidance on the correct use of fire extinguishers, including the identification of fire classes and the appropriate extinguishing methods.
