Jammu and Kashmir parts recently witnessed the heavy wet spell with snowfall blanketing Kashmir Valley’s majority of parts and rains lashing the Jammu division. The wet spell led to the disruption of essential services including the closure of roads, especially the major highways and also disrupting the electricity in several areas. The gusty winds also caused extensive damage in multiple places. While restoration efforts are underway, the pace of work must be significantly accelerated to ensure normalcy is restored at the earliest. Electricity remains the most urgent concern. Extended power disruptions, particularly in remote and hilly areas, have severely affected daily life, healthcare services and commercial activity. With weather conditions improving, all concerned departments must work in mission mode to restore power in the remaining affected areas. Adequate manpower, availability of transformers and quick repair of damaged transmission lines should be ensured without delay. Temporary arrangements, wherever feasible, can help ease the suffering until full restoration is achieved. Equally important is the reopening of roads that remain blocked due to multiple reasons. Road connectivity is the lifeline of Jammu and Kashmir, and its disruption hampers the movement of essential supplies, emergency services and relief teams. Priority must be given to clearing major highways and key link roads, followed by interior routes that connect villages and far-flung habitations. Beyond restoring infrastructure, the administration must not lose sight of the human cost of the recent wet spell. Many families have suffered damage to homes and other properties. Immediate assessment of losses and prompt disbursement of relief and compensation are crucial to prevent further distress, especially as winter conditions persist in several areas.
