The snowfall in Kashmir has brought an end to the dry spell in Jammu and Kashmir and it has turned the scenic beauty into a joyous moment for the tourism players as it has revived livelihoods, restored confidence and rekindled hope across the Valley’s tourism landscape. From Dal Lake to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, the steady rise in tourist footfall signals a welcome turnaround after months of uncertainty. Tourism in Kashmir is a lifeline that sustains thousands of families. Shikara operators, houseboat owners, hoteliers, guides and small traders all move in rhythm with the arrival of visitors. The current resurgence reflects not just nature’s generosity but also the collective effort of stakeholders and government agencies who have worked to rebuild trust, improve facilities and promote the region as a safe and inviting destination. The encouraging occupancy rates in Gulmarg and Sonamarg, coupled with renewed interest in Dal Lake houseboats and winter stays in Pahalgam, point to the growing appeal of Kashmir as a year-round destination. Snow sports, winter landscapes and improved connectivity, including new infrastructure like tunnels, are changing traditional tourism patterns and spreading economic benefits beyond the summer season. However, this revival must be nurtured carefully. Authorities need to ensure smooth road connectivity, efficient snow clearance, safety measures and sustainable tourism practices. Opening more destinations in a planned manner will help distribute tourist inflow evenly and prevent overburdening popular spots. At the same time, preserving Kashmir’s fragile ecology must remain a priority. The smiles returning to faces across the Valley tell a powerful story. When tourists return, so does dignity of work and stability of income. The warmth of kahwa, shared stories and open hearts once again define Kashmir’s hospitality. As snow blankets the mountains, it carries with it a simple truth: when tourism thrives, hope thrives too and Kashmir breathes easier.
