Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

In a bid to expand zero-emission mobility and provide commuters faster, cleaner and more reliable travel options, the Jammu and Srinagar are set for a major improvement in the public transport as the twin capitals of Jammu & Kashmir prepare to add a new fleet of 200 electric buses under the PM eBus Sewa Scheme. The rollout of infrastructure for 200 electric buses marks a significant step toward modernizing urban mobility in the region. Amid congestion and pollution, the rollout signals a timely and necessary transition to cleaner and more efficient public transportation. Electric buses promise multiple benefits. They reduce carbon emissions, curb noise pollution and lower long-term operational costs compared to conventional diesel fleets. A modern e-bus network can substantially ease commuter stress while contributing to improved air quality in both the capitals. Sustainable transport is not merely an option but an obligation in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the success of this initiative will depend not only on procurement but on robust supporting infrastructure. Charging stations, maintenance depots, skilled manpower, and reliable power supply must be put in place well before the buses hit the roads. Seamless route planning, integration with existing transport services and public awareness campaigns will also be critical to ensure optimal ridership. The PM eBus Sewa Scheme offers Jammu & Kashmir an opportunity to align with the national vision of green growth and sustainable urbanization. If implemented efficiently and transparently, the project can become a model for other hilly and ecologically sensitive regions. The transition to electric mobility is more than a technological upgrade; it represents a commitment to a cleaner future. With careful planning and sustained oversight, the 200 e-buses could well redefine public transport in Jammu and Srinagar.
