Police foil timber smuggling bid in Kunzer, accused held

Srinagar, Feb 16: In a major crackdown against the illegal timber trade, Baramulla Police have seized a huge consignment of forest wood and arrested a smuggler in the Kunzer area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Acting on a specific tip-off regarding smuggling of timber in the Goigam area, a police party was immediately rushed to the spot. During the search operation, authorities recovered a large quantity of illegal timber, including 38 window frames and several wooden planks, from the possession of the accused.
The accused has been identified as Khursheed Ahmad Khan, son of Abdul Ghani Khan, a resident of Goigam.
A case has been registered at Police Station Kunzer under FIR No. 13/2026. The accused has been booked under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Indian Forest Act.
A police spokesperson said a thorough investigation has been taken up to dismantle the smuggling network the statement further reads.
Notably, authorities have maintained a strict vigil against timber smuggling in the region, with security forces regularly conducting anti-smuggling operations to protect the valley’s depleting forest wealth. (KNS)
