Srinagar, Feb 21: In a significant push towards enhancing advanced healthcare services and medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 24 new and enhanced DM and MCh super-specialty seats for the academic session 2025–26.
Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Itoo termed the move a “major boost” to J&K’s healthcare infrastructure and academic ecosystem.
She said that the newly sanctioned seats will be distributed among leading institutions, including Government Medical College Srinagar, Government Medical College Jammu, and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura.
The expansion is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of these institutions to offer super-specialty training and deliver advanced patient care.
“This expansion will strengthen tertiary care, build specialist capacity, and create more opportunities for our young doctors within J&K,” Itoo said, adding that the initiative will also help reduce the burden on patients who currently travel outside the Union Territory for specialized treatment.
In a post on X, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to upgrading healthcare institutions and improving access to quality medical services. “A major boost to advanced healthcare and medical education in J&K. NMC has approved 24 new/increased DM and MCh super-specialty seats for AY 2025–26 across GMC Srinagar, GMC Jammu, and SKIMS. This expansion will strengthen tertiary care and create more opportunities for our young doctors,” she stated.
Officials said that the addition of super-specialty seats will not only improve the doctor-to-patient ratio in critical disciplines but also contribute to the long-term goal of making Jammu and Kashmir self-reliant in advanced medical care.
