Winter Games, Enduring Lessons

The much-awaited Khelo India Winter Games-6.0 commenced at Gulmarg, where over 1000 athletes and officials are participating. The place has once again started echoing with energy, ambition and hope. Beyond medals and podium finishes, these Games carry a deeper message i.e. the sports are a real-life school that shape youth into disciplined and value-driven leaders. In every race down the slope and every moment of teamwork on the ice, young athletes learn lessons no classroom can fully impart, resilience in defeat, humility in victory, respect for rules and rivals and the courage to push personal limits. These values build character, and character builds nations. For Jammu and Kashmir, where the youth form a significant share of the population, sports can be a powerful instrument of transformation. The Winter Games offer opportunity. Gulmarg, with its world-class natural terrain, has the potential to become a cradle of winter sports excellence. But events alone are not enough. Sustained investment in grassroots training, modern infrastructure, professional coaching and year-round sports education is essential. Talented youngsters from remote districts must be identified early and given exposure at national and international platforms. It is high time to convert seasonal celebration into a sustained movement. By nurturing sporting talent, we not only prepare champions for tomorrow but also foster confident, disciplined citizens ready to lead in every sphere of life. Jammu and Kashmir’s youth deserve that platform and the nation deserves the leaders they can become.
