Srinagar, Feb 25: On the directives of the Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, a multi-departmental joint inspection team conducted an intensive market surveillance drive in the Bemina area on Wednesday.
The drive aimed to guarantee the availability of safe, hygienic and high-quality food products for consumers while curbing unfair trade practices.
The team was led by SDM West, Irfan Bahadur while the officers and officials from different departments including Revenue, Police, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Food Safety Department, Legal Metrology Department and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) participated in the drive.
During the inspection of fruit and vegetable vendors, bakeries, Meat shops, and grocery stores, the team observed several violations of the Food Safety & Standards Act and other regulatory norms.
During the drive, two Food Business Operators (FBOs) were issued challans for poor hygiene and failure to maintain proper food handling conditions. Additionally, 08 cases were booked, resulting in an on-spot fine of Rs 5,000 imposed on erring traders. The team discovered 05 domestic LPG cylinders being illegally used for commercial activities. These were seized immediately for further legal action.
The team further verified rate list displays, FSSAI labeling norms, and the storage conditions of perishable items to prevent overcharging and the sale of substandard goods.
These inspections will be intensified and non-compliant businesses will face strict penalties, including license suspension and prosecution.
