In Jammu and Kashmir, the linemen of the Power Development Department (PDD) remain among the most unsung yet indispensable workers in public service. Their job is not confined to routine maintenance of power lines but often involves braving extreme weather, hazardous terrains and emergency situations to restore electricity for the public. Whether during harsh winters, natural calamities, or even tense security situations, these frontline workers ensure that homes, hospitals, and institutions remain connected to the lifeline of power. The region’s challenging geography and climate make their work particularly demanding. Snowstorms, heavy rains, landslides, and strong winds frequently damage power infrastructure, requiring immediate repair. In such situations, linemen risk their lives by climbing poles, repairing high-voltage lines, and working in remote areas where safety conditions are far from ideal. Their commitment becomes even more evident during crises, when restoring power quickly is critical for relief operations and public safety. Despite their vital role, incidents of accidents involving linemen have raised serious concerns about workplace safety. The goal of ensuring zero casualties among linemen, as recently emphasized by the leadership, must translate into concrete action. Adequate protective gear, modern equipment, regular safety training, and strict adherence to safety protocols are essential. Equally important is ensuring proper coordination, supervision, and technological upgrades that reduce the risks associated with manual interventions. The government must treat the safety of these workers as a top priority. Investing in their protection is not merely an administrative responsibility but a moral obligation. After all, linemen are the silent guardians of the power network who keep the lights on even in the darkest and most difficult moments. Recognizing their courage and ensuring their safety is the least society can do for those who work tirelessly to power the region.
