The Union Government’s approval of Rs 330.34 crore as additional central assistance for Jammu and Kashmir comes as a timely step to support relief and recovery efforts following the damages caused by floods, flash floods, cloudbursts and landslides during 2025. The floods and other natural calamities have been frequent due to its fragile mountainous terrain and unpredictable weather patterns. Therefore, such financial assistance at this juncture is crucial for rebuilding lives and restoring infrastructure. The decision, taken by a High-Level Committee chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is part of a broader package of Rs 1,912.99 crore sanctioned for several disaster-hit States and Union Territories. The funds will be released from the National Disaster Response Fund, with adjustments linked to the State Disaster Response Fund balances. This support reflects the Centre’s continued commitment under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to assist regions grappling with the aftermath of natural disasters. For Jammu and Kashmir, the assistance is a lifeline for communities that often bear the brunt of landslides and flash floods, particularly in hilly and remote areas. These calamities damage roads, bridges, homes and agricultural land, disrupting livelihoods and isolating villages for days. However, while relief funds are essential for recovery, they must also be complemented by stronger disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies. Investment in resilient infrastructure, improved early warning systems, and better land-use planning is necessary to reduce the impact of future disasters. Equally important is ensuring that relief funds reach the affected people promptly and transparently. As climate-related events become more frequent, Jammu and Kashmir must adopt a long-term approach to disaster management. The latest central assistance provides an opportunity not only to rebuild what has been lost but also to build back stronger and safer for the future.
