Festivity meets price shock

As the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr approaches, the markets across Kashmir are witnessing an unsettling trend i.e a sudden spike in mutton prices. Many consumers report paying between Rs 750 and Rs 800 in retail markets. This steep rise has left households worried at a time when families are preparing to celebrate a festival centered on sharing meals, generosity and togetherness. In Kashmir, mutton is an integral part of the region’s culinary and cultural traditions, especially during festive occasions. Dishes prepared with mutton are often central to Eid gatherings, and many families consider it an essential component of their celebrations. When prices soar suddenly, it places a heavy burden on middle- and lower-income households who struggle to keep pace with the rising cost. The timing of the price surge raises serious concerns. Festivals often witness increased demand, but such sharp hikes also hint at possible market manipulation, hoarding or lack of effective price monitoring. If unchecked, this trend undermines consumer confidence and creates unnecessary hardship during what should be a joyous period. Authorities must take the responsibility for regulating the market once again and must step in promptly. Strict monitoring of meat markets, enforcement of price lists and action against violators are necessary to prevent exploitation. At the same time, a transparent supply chain and adequate livestock availability must be ensured so that demand does not translate into unjustified profiteering.
