Advancing brain health: How technology is transforming brain tumor treatment

The persistent encroachment of footpaths in Srinagar reflects a troubling disconnect between public spending and public benefit. Despite the government investing crores of rupees in constructing and renovating pedestrian pathways, these spaces have increasingly been taken over by street vendors, forcing pedestrians onto busy roads and exposing them to serious safety risks. The issue becomes even more pronounced during peak shopping periods such as the days leading up to Eid-ul-Fitr. Markets in key commercial areas like Lal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Habba Kadal, and the SMHS vicinity witness a surge in footfall, yet the very infrastructure meant to accommodate pedestrians remains inaccessible. Instead of serving their intended purpose, footpaths have effectively turned into extensions of informal marketplaces. While street vending is an important source of livelihood for many, its unregulated spread cannot come at the cost of public safety. Pedestrians, including the elderly, children, and women, are left with no option but to navigate through congested roads amid heavy vehicular movement. This not only increases the risk of accidents but also undermines the fundamental right to safe mobility. The situation calls for a balanced and pragmatic approach. Authorities must enforce regulations to keep footpaths free while simultaneously creating designated vending zones to support livelihoods. Mere construction of infrastructure without ensuring its proper use leads to wastage of public funds and erosion of trust. Srinagar urgently needs coordinated action to reclaim its footpaths. Ensuring pedestrian safety is not just a matter of urban planning, but a measure of governance and civic responsibility.
