Traffic snarls at Pattan set to end, bypass likely before deadline: DC Baramulla

Baramulla, Apr 8: Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Syed Fakhrudin Hamid on Wednesday said that traffic snarls at Pattan would end soon as the bypass project is likely to be completed before the stipulated deadline.
Talking to reporters, the DC, on the sidelines of an event, said the administration is hopeful that the project will be completed before the timeline ends. It would bring lasting relief to commuters and residents.
He said several challenges that surfaced during the construction phase were addressed through sustained coordination with locals and the executing agency. “We heard concerns and resolved several issues to maintain cordial relations between locals and the executing agency. At the same time, we ensured that agricultural and horticulture activities were not disrupted,” he said.
The DC expressed confidence that the bypass, once operational, will permanently resolve the traffic mess in Pattan, a key transit town on the Srinagar-Uri highway stretch.
He also said the administration has initiated discussions with local stakeholders on decongestion and beautification of the historic town. “We have taken inputs from locals. A detailed plan will be studied and framed to improve traffic flow and overall outlook of the town,” he added.
The Pattan bypass is an 11-kilometre, four-lane greenfield highway project aimed at diverting through-traffic away from the town. It is part of the Srinagar-Baramulla-Uri corridor and is being executed by the Border Roads Organisation.
Officials earlier said the project had crossed over 48 percent completion in early 2026 but faced delays due to land acquisition issues and intermittent protests.
Earlier, authorities had indicated completion around July, with major earth-filling and formation works already completed and key bottlenecks cleared, keeping the project on track for an early finish. (KNO)
