Srinagar, Apr 17: The Centre on Friday formally brought into force the Women’s Reservation Act, 2023, extending a 33 per cent quota for women to legislatures in Jammu and Kashmir and other Union Territories.
Through separate notifications, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced April 17, 2026, as the effective date for the implementation of the provisions under both the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Second Amendment) Act, 2023, and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Act, 2023.
The decision coincides with ongoing parliamentary discussions on amendments aimed at operationalising the women’s quota earlier than originally planned.
The Women’s Reservation Act—also known as the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’—was passed by Parliament in September 2023 to enhance women’s representation in legislative bodies by reserving one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
As per the original framework, the reservation was to be implemented only after the completion of the delimitation process linked to the post-2027 Census, effectively delaying enforcement until 2034.
However, the government has introduced fresh legislative proposals in the Lok Sabha seeking to enable the rollout of the quota by 2029. (KINS)
