With Eid-ul-Adha approaching, the growing demand for the early release of salaries to government employees in Jammu and Kashmir deserves urgent and serious attention. Festivals are not merely religious occasions but are also periods of heightened household expenditure, social obligations and economic activity. Delays in salaries during such times place avoidable financial stress on thousands of families already coping with inflation and rising living costs. For many employees, salaries are the sole source of income used to meet daily expenses, purchase essentials, arrange for Eid celebrations and fulfil commitments towards children, education and healthcare. Pensioners and daily wagers face similar concerns. In Kashmir especially, where the local economy is heavily consumption-driven around major festivals, timely salary disbursement also supports markets, transporters, shopkeepers and small businesses dependent on seasonal spending. The government has, on several occasions in the past, released salaries and pensions ahead of Eid and other major festivals as a humanitarian and administrative measure. Repeating that practice this year would send a positive message of responsiveness and public sensitivity. It would also help restore confidence among employees who often face uncertainty regarding payment schedules. Beyond sentiment, there is an economic logic behind such a move. Early salary release increases liquidity in the market, boosts trade and helps local businesses witness improved sales during the festive period. At a time when many sectors continue to face economic pressure, this temporary financial stimulus can have wider benefits. The administration should therefore take a coordinated decision to ensure that salaries and pensions are credited before Eid-ul-Adha. Such a step would ease public anxiety, facilitate smooth celebrations and reaffirm the principle that governance must remain attentive to the practical concerns of people. Timely salaries before Eid are not a favour but an administrative necessity rooted in public welfare and economic prudence.
