The increasing visits of Parliamentary Standing Committees (PSCs) to Jammu and Kashmir mark an important and encouraging development for the Union Territory. Over the past 50 days, several committees dealing with education, finance, urban affairs, home affairs and social justice have toured Kashmir to assess ground realities and review developmental initiatives. Such engagements carry both administrative and political significance. For years, one of the major concerns surrounding Jammu and Kashmir has been the gap between policy formulation in New Delhi and the actual challenges faced on the ground. Study tours by parliamentary panels help bridge this divide by enabling Members of Parliament to directly interact with officials, institutions and stakeholders. Firsthand exposure often leads to a more informed understanding of local concerns, ranging from infrastructure and governance to youth welfare, employment and urban development. The visits also indicate that Jammu and Kashmir remains firmly on the national developmental agenda. Discussions on education reforms, MSME growth, smart city projects, financial literacy and social justice reflect an effort to integrate the Union Territory more closely with broader national priorities. This is particularly important for a region seeking sustained economic growth and institutional stability. Equally significant is the positive message these visits send outside Jammu and Kashmir. Frequent movement of parliamentary delegations contributes to improving public confidence and strengthens the perception of normalcy and stability. This has a direct bearing on tourism, investment and overall economic activity. The presence of lawmakers from different political parties also reinforces democratic engagement with the region. However, these visits must produce tangible outcomes. Study tours should not remain ceremonial exercises ending with presentations and meetings. The observations and recommendations of these committees must translate into policy action, better resource allocation and practical solutions to the issues confronting the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Sustained engagement, backed by implementation, can help build greater trust and accelerate the region’s development journey.
