The advisory issued by the Cyber Police Srinagar against fake “free movie APKs” is both timely and necessary. As digital usage rapidly expands across Jammu and Kashmir, cybercriminals are finding newer ways to exploit unsuspecting citizens through seemingly harmless entertainment applications. The promise of free access to movies, sports broadcasts or premium content often attracts users to download unofficial applications from unknown websites or social media links. However, many of these apps are carefully designed traps that can silently steal banking credentials, OTPs, passwords and personal information stored on mobile devices. In several cases across the country, victims have suffered financial losses after unknowingly granting access permissions to malicious applications. What makes this threat more dangerous is the lack of digital awareness among many users. People often focus only on convenience and cost-saving without understanding the risks involved in downloading software from unverified sources. A single careless click can compromise not just financial security but also personal privacy. The Cyber Police advisory must therefore be viewed as more than a routine warning. It is a reminder that cybersecurity is now an essential part of everyday life. Citizens must adopt safer digital habits by downloading applications only from trusted platforms, regularly updating their devices and never sharing confidential banking details online. Educational institutions, community organisations and government departments should also intensify digital literacy campaigns, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where awareness about cyber fraud remains limited. Parents, too, must guide children and teenagers who frequently access entertainment content online. As technology becomes deeply integrated into daily life, cyber vigilance can no longer remain optional. Protecting citizens in the digital era requires not only strong policing but also informed and responsible public participation.
