Jammu, Jun 10: An old mortar shell was recovered from the Bishnah sector of Jammu on Wednesday, prompting authorities to deploy a Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) to the site for safe handling and disposal of the explosive device.
Officials said the suspected unexploded ordnance was discovered in the area, following which local authorities were informed and the site was secured as a precautionary measure.
The recovery once again highlights the recurring discovery of old explosive remnants in the Bishnah belt, where farmers and labourers frequently come across rusted mortar shells and other unexploded military ordnance during agricultural and excavation activities.
Such devices are generally believed to be remnants of past military confrontations or cross-border shelling incidents and continue to pose a potential threat despite remaining buried for years.
Following the recovery, the Bomb Disposal Squad was rushed to the spot to assess the device and carry out standard safety procedures to neutralize any risk.
Authorities have repeatedly advised residents to avoid handling suspicious objects and immediately alert police or security agencies whenever any suspected explosive material is found.
Officials said established safety protocols are followed in all such cases to ensure public safety and prevent accidental explosions. [KNT]
