Leh, Jun 18: Eight traditional handicraft products from Ladaakh have been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, in a major boost to the preservation and promotion of the Union Territory’s rich cultural heritage.
The recognition highlights Ladakh’s unique craftsmanship, indigenous knowledge systems, and centuries-old artisanal traditions, while helping safeguard and promote these culturally significant products at the national and global levels.
The newly registered GI-tagged products include – Ladakh Challi Textiles, Ladakh Thigma, Ladakh Painting, Pabu of Ladakh, Ladakh Nambu Textile, Ladakh Pashmina Textile, Ladakh Chilling Metal Work and Ladakh Likir Pottery.
The recognition marks a major achievement in safeguarding Ladakh’s traditional crafts and artistic expressions while enhancing their visibility in national and international markets. GI registration provides legal protection to products linked to a specific geographical region and acknowledges the distinctive qualities, reputation and cultural significance associated with their place of origin.
“The conferment of GI status on these eight traditional Ladakhi products is a matter of immense pride for the people of Ladakh. These recognitions are not merely certifications; they are a tribute to the centuries-old craftsmanship, artistry, and cultural heritage of our people. Each product embodies the creativity of our artisans and the unique identity of Ladakh,” Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena said. “The GI tag will ensure global recognition, authenticity, and protection for our artisans, empowering them with rightful economic opportunities while safeguarding Ladakh’s unique traditions.”
The newly GI-tagged products represent diverse facets of Ladakhi life, culture and craftsmanship. The LG lauded the skills and dedication of artisans, cooperatives, and cultural custodians whose skills, dedication and tireless efforts have brought this honour to Ladakh.
The latest registrations add to Ladakh’s growing portfolio of GI-tagged products. Earlier, Raktsey Karpo Apricot, Ladakh Pashmina, and Shing-Tsak had received GI recognition, highlighting the exceptional quality and uniqueness of Ladakh’s agricultural and artisanal products. (KNO)
