Are we forgetting our parents?

As Muharram unfolds across Srinagar, the sight of Sabeels serving water and refreshments at street corners, marketplaces and neighbourhoods offers more than relief from the summer heat. These humble stalls embody a timeless message of compassion, sacrifice and service that lies at the heart of the remembrance of Karbala. The tradition of setting up Sabeels is deeply rooted in the memory of the suffering endured by Imam Hussain (AS), his family and companions on the plains of Karbala. Yet, its significance extends far beyond a historical event. By offering water and refreshments free of cost to all, regardless of faith, background or social status, volunteers translate the values of Karbala into a living act of public service. Particularly encouraging is the active participation of young people. In an age often marked by individualism and digital isolation, the willingness of youth to devote their time and energy to serving strangers reflects a spirit of community that deserves recognition and encouragement. Their efforts demonstrate that the lessons of Karbala continue to inspire newer generations. The Sabeels also serve as bridges of social harmony. People from different communities stop to receive refreshments, interact with volunteers and share in an atmosphere of goodwill. Such initiatives reinforce the idea that the message of Imam Hussain (AS) is universal that speaks of justice, dignity, truth and concern for fellow human beings. In a society increasingly challenged by divisions and distractions, these acts of selfless service offer a valuable reminder of shared humanity. They show that remembrance is not confined to rituals alone but finds its highest expression in helping others. As Muharram continues, the Sabeels of Srinagar stand as quiet yet powerful symbols of generosity and unity. Their message is simple but enduring i.e. service to humanity remains one of the noblest tributes to the legacy of Karbala.
