Srinagar, Jun 19: Fresh rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms lashed several parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, extending what has already been an unusually wet June, with the Meteorological Department forecasting the prevailing weather system to continue till June 22.
Director Meteorological Department Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said intermittent rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and isolated hailstorms are likely at many places across Kashmir and parts of Jammu during the next few days.
The Valley witnessed another spell of rainfall on Friday afternoon, leading to cooler conditions. The latest showers are part of a recurring pattern that has dominated weather conditions across Kashmir throughout much of June.
In Jammu, where high temperatures had persisted over the past several days, rainfall brought considerable respite to residents grappling with intense heat.
The MeT Department has warned of localized flash floods, mudslides, shooting stones and waterlogging in vulnerable areas during periods of intense rainfall. Authorities have advised people to remain indoors during lightning activity and avoid movement near streams, nallahs and landslide-prone areas.
Farmers and orchardists have also been urged to remain vigilant in view of the possibility of hailstorms and gusty winds. [KNT]
