After the successful culmination of Hajj-2026, the unveiling of Hajj Policy-2027 marks another significant step in India’s efforts to make the sacred pilgrimage more accessible, safe and pilgrim-centric. By announcing the policy well in advance and opening the application process early, the Government has demonstrated a commitment to better planning and smoother execution of one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings. The policy builds upon reforms introduced in recent years, including improved accommodation, better arrangements in Mina and the continuation of the popular Short Hajj Package. These measures reflect a growing recognition that the pilgrimage experience extends beyond travel logistics and encompasses the comfort, dignity and well-being of pilgrims. Particularly noteworthy is the emphasis on technology. The proposed use of Artificial Intelligence for application verification, document scrutiny, flight allocation and grievance redressal has the potential to reduce delays, enhance transparency and improve efficiency. The planned multilingual AI assistance platform can further simplify procedures for thousands of applicants, especially senior citizens and first-time pilgrims. The strengthening of field-level support through a better ratio of Hajj inspectors to pilgrims is another welcome initiative. Effective on-ground assistance is crucial in ensuring the safety and convenience of pilgrims, particularly in challenging situations. Similarly, stricter health screening measures, aligned with Saudi regulations, reflect a responsible approach towards pilgrim welfare and public health. The decision to accommodate a section of applicants who remained on the waiting list during Haj-2026 also promotes fairness and addresses the growing demand for Hajj seats. Meanwhile, the addition of Kolkata as an embarkation point is likely to ease travel for pilgrims from eastern India. However, successful implementation will be the true test of the policy. Technology, infrastructure and support systems must function seamlessly on the ground. If executed effectively, Hajj Policy-2027 can serve as a model of efficient public service, ensuring that every pilgrim undertakes the sacred journey with greater ease, safety and dignity.
