Srinagar, Jun 24: Locals the Alochibagh area of Srinagar on Tuesday staged a protest against the dumping of waste near their residential locality, alleging that the site has become a source of environmental pollution and public health concerns.
Holding placards and raising slogans, the protesters demanded an immediate halt to waste dumping in the area and called for the relocation of the site to a location away from residential settlements.
Residents alleged that the continuous dumping of garbage in close proximity to their homes has resulted in foul smell, accumulation of waste, and the presence of stray animals and disease-carrying insects.
They expressed concern over the impact of the dumping site on the health and well-being of local residents, particularly children, elderly people and those suffering from respiratory ailments.
The protesters said the issue has persisted despite repeated representations to the concerned authorities and claimed that no effective measures have been taken to address their grievances.
Appealing to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the administration, the residents sought immediate intervention and a permanent solution to the problem.
They maintained that the locality deserves a clean and healthy environment and urged the authorities to identify an alternative site for waste disposal.
The protesting residents warned that if the issue remains unresolved, they would be compelled to intensify their agitation in the coming days. [KNT]
